Two distinct jobs share the name. Chainsaw files are round and sized to the chain pitch, so the diameter is not a preference but a specification: use the size the chain manufacturer states, because a file that is too small rounds the cutting edge and one too large will not seat in the gullet. The sizes stocked here are 3/16in (4.7mm), 5/32in (4mm) and 7/32in, and a handled file is easier to hold at a consistent angle than a bare one. Engineers files are for metal and are classified by shape and by cut. Shape follows the surface: flat for broad work, round for enlarging holes and curves, half round to do both, and three square for corners and internal angles. A round file is often called a rat tail. Cut describes how coarse the teeth are, and second cut is the general purpose grade that removes material at a usable rate while still leaving a reasonable finish. Wood rasps have far coarser teeth again and are for shaping timber, not metal. File in one direction on the push stroke only, because dragging back over the work blunts the teeth.

Faithfull is the widest range, covering handled second cut engineers files in hand, round and half round patterns at 200mm and 250mm, a three square file at 8in, a handled flat wood rasp at 200mm and handled chainsaw files at 5/32in and 7/32in. Dargan supplies chainsaw files at 5/32in and 3/16in plus a 5in tapered file, and Bahco a 200mm chainsaw file at 5/32in. Tala and ALM add chainsaw sharpening files at 3/16in and 5/32in, with Bluespot making a 6 piece mini file set with a pouch for fine work and Stanley a Surform round file.
