Toilet style is decided by the plumbing and the space more than by looks. A close coupled WC has the cistern sitting directly on the pan and is the standard replacement for most Irish bathrooms, because it fits the existing waste and water positions with least disruption. Fully shrouded means the pan is closed in to the floor with no gap behind or underneath, which is far easier to clean than an open back. Back to wall and wall hung units hide the cistern inside a frame or furniture unit for a flush finish, but need the wall built out first. Comfort height sits roughly 60mm to 80mm taller than standard, which makes a real difference for anyone with a bad back, hip or knee, and is worth specifying rather than discovering afterwards. Rimless pans have no enclosed rim channel, so there is nowhere for limescale and grime to hide. A soft close seat stops the lid slamming and is now standard on most ranges rather than an extra. Complete toilet in a box sets supply pan, cistern, fittings and seat together, which removes the risk of buying parts that do not match.
