What goes inside decides the box. A shallow box with a lined tray suits rings, studs and small chains and keeps them from tangling, while necklaces need depth and ideally hooks or a taller compartment, because a long chain folded into a flat tray knots. If the collection is mixed or growing, a large box with multiple tiers is the better buy than two small ones, since it separates categories rather than piling them together. Lining matters more than the outside: a soft velvet or felt interior stops metal scratching against metal and against the box itself, which is the main cause of dulled silver and scuffed plating. Colour is a straightforward preference, though a lighter box shows marks and a black one hides them. Childrens musical jewellery boxes are a different product with a different purpose, opening to a spinning figure and a wind-up tune, so they are bought as a gift and a keepsake rather than as serious storage.
