Lighting

Whether you are browsing online or looking for a lighting shop in Athlone, choosing a light starts with two questions: where it is going, and how it will be powered. Outdoor lights have to cope with Irish weather, so check the IP rating before anything else, IP54 resists splashing rain while IP65 is fully weatherproof and dustproof. Then decide on power. A mains wired outdoor wall light or floodlight gives the most output and never needs charging, but it needs a supply at the wall. A solar wall light or solar floodlight needs no cable at all and suits sheds, side gates and garden walls, at the cost of shorter run times through the winter months. Indoors, the choice is between a fixed fitting such as a bathroom globe light or a pull cord striplight, a plug in night light that works from any 13A socket, and battery operated lights that stick on wherever there is no power point at all.

Brightness is measured in lumens, not watts. A 3W decorative wedge wall light gives a soft accent on brickwork, a 10W up and down wall light at 520 lumens lights a front door, and an 18W LED bulkhead at 1,800 lumens or a 20W floodlight at 1,800 lumens lights a whole driveway or yard. How a light switches on matters as much as how bright it is. A PIR sensor switches a security light on when it detects movement and off again afterwards, a photocell or dusk to dawn sensor switches on at dusk and off at daylight, and a switched or remote controlled light stays under your control. Motion sensor lights are the right answer for a path, a back door or a stairwell, and dusk to dawn lighting suits a porch or a landing where you want light all night.

Outdoor & Solar Lighting

Mains and solar powered lights for walls, doors, driveways and yards. Outdoor wall lights cover decorative stainless steel fittings in slate grey and brushed stainless, a 10W up and down wall light that washes light both ways across the wall and a 3W wedge for a softer accent, alongside solar wall lights with PIR at 300 and 600 lumens and a 220 lumen solar wall lantern for a front door. Indoor Lighting

Fixed and decorative lights for inside the house. LED strip lights cover a 5 metre RGBIC smart strip that shows different colours along its length at the same time, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth app control, voice control through Alexa and Google Assistant, and music sync. Colour changing mood lights come as a battery powered 4 pack with a remote and timer. Night & Sensor Lights

Battery motion sensor lights go anywhere there is no power supply and switch off after 30 seconds. Lighting Clearance

Lighting is reduced as ranges change rather than in one big seasonal sale, usually one finish or one version of a light at a time as a range is replaced. Reduced lighting is listed with the rest of the store's reductions in clearance.
