Wheel count and body material decide what a barrow or cart is actually good for. A single-wheel wheelbarrow steers through the tightest gaps, such as a narrow side passage or between raised beds, but needs more balance to keep level when full. A two or four wheel utility cart trades that manoeuvrability for stability, carrying a much heavier or more awkward load, such as a stack of firewood or bagged soil, without tipping. A sack truck is built specifically for stacked, rigid loads like boxes or crates, using two wheels and a flat base plate rather than a barrow's tub. Folding hand trolleys give up some load capacity for the ability to store flat in a car boot or shed. Plastic bodies resist rust and are lighter to manoeuvre empty, while a puncture-proof solid wheel avoids the one failure that puts a barrow out of action mid-job.
