This is everything that is not a light set or a tree, and it splits by where it goes. Outdoor Christmas decorations are worth planning first, because they are the most visible and the least forgiving. Indoors, the door and the hall do the most work for the least effort. On the tree, shatterproof baubles are the sensible choice in a house with children or a cat. And the character pieces are the part people actually enjoy choosing.

A note on buying that holds every year: the larger outdoor figures and the 76cm wreaths are the first things to go, usually well before December, and Irish demand for Christmas decorations peaks in November rather than in the run-up to the day itself. Buy the outdoor pieces early at full price and wait on the indoor extras, which are cheapest in the January clearance.

Outdoor Christmas Decorations

Standing Santas from 60cm to 90cm, light up rope figures, candy cane arches and illuminated Merry Christmas signs are what carry a driveway, a porch or a front garden. Anything going outside needs to be rated for exterior use and run from a weatherproof connection box rather than an extension lead left exposed. Shatterproof baubles come in packs sized for a whole tree rather than as singles, which is the cheaper way to buy and the safer one in a house with children or pets.
