Drill Bits

A drill bit is chosen by the material first and the diameter second, and getting the material wrong is what blunts a bit in seconds. Masonry bits have a tungsten carbide tip and are for brick, block and concrete, sold individually and in sets from 4mm to 10mm; SDS Plus bits and chisels are the heavier version for a hammer drill. HSS bits cut metal and hard plastic, with cobalt and blacksmith grades for stainless and thicker steel. Flat wood and auger bits clear timber quickly, and hinge boring bits at 35mm cut the recess for a cabinet hinge. Tile and glass bits have a spear point and must be run slowly with no hammer action, because a masonry bit will crack a glazed tile. Step or cone bits open and enlarge holes in thin sheet metal. Screwdriver and torsion bits sit alongside, and torsion bits flex under impact rather than snapping, which is why they last in an impact driver.
