Dehumidifiers

A dehumidifier is sized by how many litres of water it pulls from the air in a day, and matching that figure to the room is the whole decision. A single bedroom or bathroom with morning condensation on the glass needs a 10 or 12 litre compact unit. A larger bedroom, a living room, a kitchen or an open-plan space needs 16 or 20 litres to keep pace with cooking, showering and breathing, all of which put moisture into the air faster than most people expect. A shed, a garage, a building site or a house recovering from a leak wants a 30 litre industrial machine, which clears saturated air far faster than a domestic unit will. At the other end, a wardrobe, a press, a caravan or a boat is better served by a passive moisture absorber that needs no power at all: a tub of crystals or a refillable cartridge that draws damp out over a few months, available in neutral or scented refills. In Ireland the two problems people actually buy for are winter condensation and drying clothes indoors. For condensation, the black spot mould that appears on window reveals and behind furniture is a symptom of humidity sitting above roughly 60 per cent, and a compressor dehumidifier running on a humidistat is the fix, not more heating. For laundry, a dehumidifier beside an airer dries a full load overnight in a closed room, and it costs a fraction of what a tumble dryer or an electric heater would to do the same job, which is why the two are so often bought together. Practical points: check the tank size against how often you want to empty it, look for continuous drainage through a hose if the unit will sit near a sink or a drain, and check the noise rating if it is going in a bedroom.
