A compressor dehumidifier is cheaper to run and pulls the most water, but its efficiency drops away below about fifteen degrees, so it is the right choice for a heated house. A desiccant dehumidifier keeps working in a cold garage, shed or unheated back room, runs quieter and puts a little warmth back into the room, at the cost of using more electricity. Beyond that, check the tank size against how often you are willing to empty it, look for continuous drainage through a hose if the unit will sit near a sink or a drain, and read the decibel figure if it is going to run overnight in a bedroom. Humidistat control is worth paying for, because it holds a target of around 50 to 55 percent and switches the unit off rather than running it continuously, and a washable filter keeps the running cost down.

The use case most Irish households actually buy for is laundry. Washing dried indoors in winter puts litres of water into the air, which is where most condensation and mould comes from in the first place, and a dehumidifier with a laundry mode dries a load faster and for far less electricity than a tumble dryer.
