Pure essential oil is the concentrated aromatic extract of a plant rather than a fragrance blend, which is why 10ml goes a long way and why it should never be applied undiluted to skin. For scenting a room the usual method is a few drops in water in a burner or diffuser, where gentle heat or vaporisation carries the scent without burning the oil off. Choice comes down to what you want the room to do. Lavender is the settling one and the usual choice for a bedroom. Eucalyptus is sharp and clearing and suits a bathroom or a room in winter. Bergamot is citrus and lifting for a living space or a work room. Lemongrass is fresh and clean. Cinnamon is warm and works seasonally. Jasmine is floral and heavier. Fresh linen sits closer to a household scent than a botanical one. Sets of three are the sensible way in if you have not used oils before, since it costs less than buying three singles and tells you which you actually reach for. Store bottles closed, upright and out of direct sunlight, because heat and light degrade the oil. Keep well away from children and pets, and check guidance before using any oil around animals or in pregnancy.
