DUPLO is the toddler range and the important thing to understand is that it is a different physical size, not simply easier sets. DUPLO bricks are roughly twice the length, width and height of standard LEGO, which makes them large enough to be safe for children who still put things in their mouths and easy enough for small, developing hands to press together and pull apart without adult help. That size is the whole point, and it is why DUPLO is marked from around 18 months where standard LEGO starts at 4 plus. The two systems are compatible in one direction: DUPLO bricks stack with standard LEGO, so a collection carries forward rather than being outgrown and discarded. Choose by the kind of play the child is doing. Vehicles and emergency services give push-along play and simple cause and effect. Animal sets support naming, sorting and matching, which is early language work disguised as play. Licensed character sets such as Bluey give a child a story they already know. Creative boxes are open-ended loose bricks with no fixed model, and they are the ones that last longest because there is nothing to finish. 3 in 1 sets rebuild into different models from the same pieces.
