Four formats cover every bathroom and the choice follows wall space and what is being hung. A towel rail or bar gives a bath towel room to spread out and dry properly, which is the only way a towel dries between uses rather than staying damp, and rails here come at 18 inch and 24 inch with a double rail available where wall width is limited but hanging length is not. A towel ring takes a hand towel beside a basin and needs a fraction of the space a rail does, which is usually the right answer next to a sink. Hooks take the least room of all and suit dressing gowns and damp towels behind a door, though a towel on a hook dries slowly because it hangs bunched. Freestanding rails solve the problem no fixing can, which is a rented property or a tiled wall you do not want to drill, and an overdoor hook does the same job for a single towel. Finish is worth planning across the whole room rather than per item, because chrome, black, gold and gun metal all read very differently against tiles and taps, and mixing them rarely looks deliberate. Check fixing centres against existing holes if you are replacing rather than fitting new.
