Most shower heads screw onto a standard hose connection, so a replacement is usually a two minute job, and the thing to check is the hose fitting rather than the head. The exception is an electric shower, which often takes a manufacturer specific head, and fitting the wrong one restricts the flow the unit is designed around. Beyond fit, the choice is what the head does to the water. A single jet head gives one steady spray and is the straight like for like replacement. Multi function heads change the spray pattern at the head itself, typically running from a full rain spray through to a concentrated massage jet, and are stocked here in 3 function, 5 function and 5 way versions. Filter heads with mineral beads work differently again: hundreds of Maifan stone pebbles sit inside the head and filter the water as it passes, while fine stainless steel nozzles narrow the flow to raise the pressure at the head, which gives a firmer spray from the same supply while using less water. A rain shower head is wider and drops water vertically rather than spraying it forward, which suits a fixed overhead position more than a handset. Where there is no shower over the bath at all, a spray head that fits onto the tap is the answer without any plumbing work.
