LEGO Technic

Technic is the engineering theme, and it differs from ordinary LEGO in a way that matters when choosing a gift. Instead of standard bricks it uses beams, axles, pins, gears and connectors to build working mechanisms, so a finished Technic model has moving parts: steering that turns, suspension that compresses, pistons that travel, a boom that raises. That makes the build itself the point rather than the play afterwards, which is why Technic suits older children and adults who enjoy the process. Difficulty spans a wide range, so read the piece count and age marking rather than assuming Technic means advanced. Pull-back models are the entry point, using a simple wind-and-release motor and building in an hour or so. Licensed cars sit in the middle and upper range, where the appeal is a recognisable vehicle rendered in accurate detail. Construction and agricultural machines are usually the most mechanically interesting, since a digger or harvester has more functions to replicate than a car. Set number identifies the exact model and is how LEGO catalogues everything, so it is worth quoting when comparing. Technic pieces combine with standard LEGO, so parts carry forward into other builds rather than being a closed system.
