Shelving & Hooks

Storage that fixes to a wall or stands on the floor, from a single floating shelf up to a full garage racking bay. The first decision is whether the shelf carries its own weight or the wall does. Freestanding shelving units and steel racking need no fixings and suit a garage, shed or utility room, and load ratings matter because paint tins and tools are heavier than they look. Wall mounted shelving transfers everything into the masonry, so the fixing is the weak point rather than the shelf: a plasterboard wall needs proper cavity fixings, and solid block or brick needs the right plug and screw. Adjustable twin slotted systems use vertical uprights with brackets that hook in at any height, so the whole wall can be reconfigured later without redrilling. Floating shelves conceal the bracket inside the shelf for a clean line but carry less. Corner shelves use the space nothing else fits into. Hooks and adhesive hanging solutions cover the light end, for coats, tools and utility items where no drilling is wanted at all.

Shelving Units

Freestanding units for garage, shed and utility storage, where the load and the footprint matter more than the look. Steel racking and boltless shelving assemble without tools and take the heaviest loads, typically rated per shelf rather than per unit, so check the figure against what you actually plan to store. Plastic and resin units resist damp and will not rust, which suits a shed or a garage floor that occasionally floods. Floating Shelves

Floating shelves hide the fixing inside the shelf body so nothing shows underneath, which is why they suit a sitting room, hall or bedroom where a visible bracket would look wrong. The trade-off is capacity: the concealed bar carries less than an equivalent L-bracket, so they are for books, photos, plants and speakers rather than tools or paint. Depth runs roughly 15cm to 24cm and length from around 40cm to 120cm. They need a solid fixing behind them, so on plasterboard find the stud or use proper cavity anchors. Wall Shelves

Wall shelves with a visible bracket or a fixed frame, which is the stronger and cheaper option where appearance is secondary. These suit a utility room, kitchen, garage or workshop, and a shelf on two well-fixed brackets will outcarry a floating shelf of the same size several times over. Straight shelves in white, oak and black cover most rooms, and some ranges come as a shelf and bracket set sized to match so there is nothing to work out. Corner Shelves

Corner shelves use the one part of a room nothing else fits, which makes them the practical answer in a small bathroom, a landing or beside a chimney breast. They come as single triangular shelves or as multi-tier corner units, and the fixing spreads across two walls, which actually makes them steadier than a straight shelf of the same size. Depth is measured along the wall rather than out from it, so a shelf described as 25cm projects considerably less than that into the room. Useful for plants, toiletries and small storage.

Shelf Brackets

The brackets themselves, sold separately so you can pair them with your own timber or replace a broken one. Size the bracket arm to at least two thirds of the shelf depth. Fixed L-shape brackets are the strongest and simplest, in white, black, silver and grey from 120mm x 80mm up to 500mm x 330mm, with a heavier industrial pattern for garage and pantry loads. Twin slotted brackets hook into vertical uprights at any height for an adjustable run, and folding brackets drop flat when the shelf is not needed. Uprights

The vertical rails that a twin slotted shelving system hangs from, sold in 2400mm lengths so a full-height run can be cut to size. Two or more uprights are fixed plumb to the wall at regular centres, then brackets clip into the slots at whatever height you choose and can be moved later without touching the wall again. This is the system worth using where the contents will change, such as a pantry, a workshop or a growing collection of files, because adding a shelf later takes minutes and no drilling.

Hooks

Hooks and hanging solutions for the light end of storage, covering coat and utility hooks, over-door hooks and adhesive hanging strips. The choice is really about whether you want to drill. Screw-fixed hooks carry real weight for coats, bags and tools. Adhesive and no-drill options such as Takker hanging systems leave no hole and suit rented houses, tiled walls and anything you may want to move, though each has a stated weight limit worth respecting.
