Uprights

An upright is the vertical wall channel in a twin slotted shelving system, and it is what makes that system adjustable. The upright fixes to the wall through several points along its length, spreading the load rather than concentrating it at two brackets, and the paired slots down its face accept brackets at any height. That means shelf spacing can be changed later without new holes, which is the reason this approach suits a garage, shed or utility room where what is being stored changes over time. Twin slot means each level has two slots side by side, and the bracket hooks into both, which is considerably stronger than a single slot design and is what allows genuinely heavy loads. Length is chosen by how many shelves you want and how far down the wall they should run, with 950mm and 1220mm suiting most single-run installations. Uprights are sold separately from brackets and shelves, so a working system needs at least two uprights, brackets to match the shelf depth, and boards. Fixing is critical because the whole load goes through it: solid masonry takes standard plugs, plasterboard needs fixing into the studs behind rather than the board itself. Set both uprights level with each other before loading, since a shelf out of level will slide its contents.
