Free standing shelving needs no wall fixings, which is what makes it the answer in a garage, shed, utility room or rented space where drilling is out of the question. Two constructions cover the range and they suit different loads. Plastic units clip together without tools, weigh almost nothing, will not rust and wipe clean, which makes them right for a damp shed, a garage floor that occasionally floods, or storing paint, garden chemicals and cleaning products. Their limit is point loading: they carry a spread load well but will bow under something heavy concentrated in the middle of a shelf. Galvanised steel boltless shelving is the heavier option, assembling by slotting beams into uprights with no bolts and no spanner, and the galvanised finish resists rust in an unheated space. That is what tools, tins of paint, timber offcuts and workshop stock need. Tier count decides how the space divides rather than total capacity, so a 4 tier unit gives taller gaps for boxes and a 5 tier gives more shelves for smaller items in the same height. Check the footprint against the floor space and the height against the ceiling or door frame before ordering, and load heavy items on the bottom shelves to keep the unit stable.
