A corner is usually the least used space in a room, which is exactly why a corner shelf earns its place: it adds storage without narrowing the walkable floor or projecting into the room the way a straight shelf does. Size is quoted as the two wall edges rather than a single length, so a 400mm by 400mm shelf runs 400mm along each wall and the front edge cuts diagonally across. The usable surface is smaller than those figures suggest, roughly half the area of a square that size, so measure what you intend to put on it rather than assuming. 300mm by 300mm suits a shower corner, a bathroom for bottles and soap, or a bedroom for a small plant or clock. 400mm by 400mm takes a stack of books, a speaker or a picture frame and is the more generally useful of the two. At 15mm thick these are load-bearing rather than decorative, but the fixing is what carries the weight and it has to suit both walls: solid masonry takes standard plugs, plasterboard needs proper cavity anchors, and a corner where two different wall types meet needs the right fixing on each side. Finish follows the room, with white and grey suiting bathrooms and kitchens and pine reading warmer in a bedroom or living space.
