Hooks

Hooks divide by whether they need fixings, and that is usually the deciding factor rather than the style. An overdoor hook rail hangs over the top edge of a door and needs no drilling, screws or adhesive at all, which makes it the answer in a rented property, on a hollow internal door that will not take a fixing, or anywhere you want storage that can be undone without trace. It suits coats, dressing gowns, towels and school bags, and a four hook rail turns the back of one door into a full coat rail. Screw-fixed metal hooks are the alternative where the load is heavier or more permanent. Jumbo and heavy duty hooks are sized for bulk rather than weight alone, so they take a coiled hose, an extension lead, a bicycle or garden tools where a small hook would let the item slide off. For anything screw-fixed, the fixing carries the load rather than the hook, so match it to the wall: solid masonry takes standard plugs, and plasterboard needs proper cavity anchors or a fixing into the stud behind. Two practical points: check the door thickness against an overdoor rail before buying, since thick or rebated doors do not always take them, and hang the heaviest items nearest the fixing rather than at the end of a rail.
