Hand and stand mixers solve different sized jobs. A hand mixer is light, cheap to store and quick to reach for whisking eggs, whipping cream or mixing a small batter, but the motor and your arm both tire on a heavy dough or a large batch. A stand mixer takes the effort out of exactly that: the bowl is fixed, the head does the work, and a dough hook can knead bread dough for several minutes without anyone standing over it, which is what makes a stand mixer worth the extra counter space for anyone baking regularly rather than occasionally. Bowl capacity and motor wattage on stand mixers should be sized to the biggest single bake attempted, not the everyday one, since a mixer that struggles on a large cake batter will show it in an uneven mix.
