Power Stations
A portable power station is a large battery pack with real plug sockets on the front, and the two numbers that decide which one you need are watt hours and watts. Watt hours is the tank: how much energy it stores. Watts is the tap: how much it can deliver at once. Get the second one wrong and the unit will not run the appliance at all, no matter how big the battery is. As a guide, 245Wh to 300Wh keeps phones, a laptop, lights and a camera going for a weekend and is light enough to carry in one hand. 500Wh to 1,024Wh runs a small fridge, a coffee machine or a CPAP overnight and is the size most people settle on. 2,000Wh and above, with 2,400W to 6,000W output, will run a kettle, a microwave, power tools or a fridge freezer, which is when it stops being a camping accessory and becomes genuine home backup. Expansion batteries plug into the larger units to increase capacity without buying a second station. Three uses cover most buyers. The first is camping, caravanning and campervans, where the appeal is mains sockets and USB-C fast charging with no generator noise and no fumes, and where solar input lets the unit recharge itself over a few days off grid. The second is power cuts, which in Ireland means winter storms: models with a UPS function switch over in around 10 milliseconds, fast enough that a desktop, a router or a freezer never notices. The third is work away from a socket, on a site, in a van, at a market stall or on a shoot. Look for the socket count and type, whether there is USB-C Power Delivery for a laptop, the recharge time from mains, whether it accepts solar or an alternator charger for topping up while driving, and the battery chemistry, since LiFePO4 cells last several thousand cycles against a few hundred for older types.
Anker carries the SOLIX range, from the 300W C300X and C300X DC for camping through the C1000 Gen 2 at 1,024Wh and the C2000 Gen 2 at 2,048Wh and 2,400W, up to the F1500 at 1,536Wh, the F3000 at 3,000Wh and the F3800 at 3,840Wh and 6,000W for whole home backup, plus the BP2000 expansion battery. EcoFlow runs a parallel range through the River 3 at 245Wh with 10ms UPS, the River 3 Plus at 286Wh and River 3 Max at 576Wh, the Delta 2 and Delta 3 at 1,024Wh, the Delta 2 Max at 2,048Wh and the Delta Pro 3 at the top, along with the Trail 200 DC and an alternator charger for recharging from a vehicle. DJI adds the Power 1000 V2, built around fast recharging and drone batteries. To recharge off grid see Solar Panels, for something pocket sized rather than a unit with plug sockets see Power Banks, and for the wider outage range see Power Cut & Emergency Essentials.
In a power cut a power station is the piece that keeps the house running rather than merely lit. A unit of 1,024Wh or more holds a fridge freezer through an overnight outage, keeps the router and a laptop live so you can work or reach the ESB outage map, and charges phones for a family without anyone queuing for a socket. Because it runs indoors with no exhaust it can sit in a hallway or kitchen where a generator cannot, and the UPS models hand over fast enough that nothing on the circuit reboots. Pair one with a folding solar panel if an outage may last beyond a day.
Power stations carry high starting prices and the brands compete directly, so the Black Friday and Cyber Monday reductions are among the largest in absolute terms anywhere in the shop. November is also when Irish demand climbs, as the first winter storms arrive, so the well specified mid range units sell out early and buying in the quieter months of late spring often beats waiting. Prices are live all year, so see what is reduced now on power stations on sale.
