Heating is the most seasonal category in the shop and the pricing follows the weather, which means the sale prices worth having appear at the two ends of the season rather than in the middle of it. Buying a heater in September or in March is cheaper than buying the same heater in the first cold snap of December, when everybody in the country wants one at once.

The decision that saves the most money is not which heater to buy, it is which room you are heating and for how long. Running cost is simply wattage multiplied by hours, so a 2kW fan heater costs the same to run as a 2kW oil filled radiator; the difference is that the fan heater gets the room warm quickly and stops feeling warm the moment it is off, while the oil filled radiator takes longer to come up and keeps radiating after it switches off. For a room you sit in all evening, the slow heater is cheaper because the thermostat cycles it off more often. For a room you are in for twenty minutes, the fast heater wins.

Bottled gas is the cheapest way to heat a large or poorly insulated room, which is why gas heaters remain the most searched heating product in Ireland despite needing ventilation and a cylinder. Electric radiators, both oil filled and oil free, are the everyday choice for a bedroom or a home office. Infrared panels heat objects and people rather than air, which suits a conservatory or a high ceilinged room where warm air simply rises away. Electric fires give a focal point and usually run their flame effect for almost nothing with the heat switched off. Personal warmth, meaning electric blankets, heated throws, heat pads and hot water bottles, costs a fraction of heating a room at all and is the cheapest heating decision available to anyone.

Bottled gas cabinet heaters put out serious heat for very little money per hour and need no wiring, which is why they suit a large sitting room, a workshop, a shed or a room the central heating never quite reaches.
