Age and garden size decide most of this range. Bubble machines and character bubble toys need no aim, strength or supervision beyond the usual, which makes them the right answer for toddlers and pre-school children, and they run on refill solution sold separately in 70ml and 250ml bottles or a 1 litre bottle if the machine is in daily use over a summer. Older children want range and volume instead, which means water guns and shooters. Rechargeable electric water guns fire continuously without pumping and refill from a tap, while pump action shooters at 32cm and 57cm trade convenience for reach and hold more water per fill. Water balloons in bulk packs of 75 suit parties and larger groups rather than everyday play, because they are gone in minutes. Sand play sets work indoors on a table as well as outside on a patio, and moulding sand holds its shape without water, which avoids the mess of a traditional sandpit. Inflatable pools are sized by diameter rather than depth for paddling, and a 2 metre pool suits a small garden and a young family. Children should always be supervised around water, including shallow paddling pools, and bubble solution should be kept out of reach when not in use.
