Hot Water Bottles
A rechargeable hot water bottle holds a sealed gel or fluid core that heats from the mains through a detachable lead, so there is no kettle, no funnel and no risk of scalding yourself while filling it. You plug it in for a few minutes, unplug the lead entirely, and it stays warm for hours. That is the main reason people switch: a traditional rubber bottle has to be refilled every time and perishes with age, while a rechargeable one is charged and put away. Shape drives the choice. A standard bottle suits a bed or a lap. A long bottle is the narrow format made to lie along the lower back, across the shoulders, or down the length of a cold bed, and it is the one to pick if you are treating an ache rather than just warming up. Plush and fleece covered bottles are softer against bare skin and are the usual choice for children and for anyone who finds bare rubber unpleasant, while novelty covers make them easier to give as a gift. Whichever format you choose, look for an indicator that shows when charging is complete, a cover that comes off for washing, and a sealed unit with no filling aperture at all. Check the leaflet for the stated warm time and never charge one while it is under a duvet or a cushion.
De Vielle supplies most of the range, covering rechargeable electric bottles in grey and pink, a rechargeable electric long bottle in grey for back and shoulder use, a plush covered rechargeable model, and a classic ribbed rubber bottle. Benross adds a novelty fox design, and a Diamond plush bottle rounds out the covered options. For targeted heat on a specific joint or muscle see Electric Heat Pads, and for the full category see Heating.
