Washing Machines

Washing Machines

Capacity is the first decision and it is quoted in kilograms of dry cotton, not in how full the drum looks. 7kg suits one or two people, 8kg a small family, 9kg is the size most Irish households land on, and 10, 11 and 12kg machines earn their cost if you wash duvets, towels and bedding regularly rather than occasionally. Undersizing is the common mistake, because a machine run twice uses more water and electricity than a larger one run once.

Spin speed is the second decision and it decides how much work the dryer or the line has to do afterwards. 1400rpm is the standard here and takes noticeably more water out than 1200rpm; 1600rpm goes further again and is worth having if the wash usually goes straight into a tumble dryer, because every revolution saved in the washer is drying time you do not pay for.

After that, the features that genuinely change daily life are fewer than the brochures suggest. Automatic dosing, sold as i-DOS, Auto Dose or IDOS, measures detergent per load and is the feature owners mention most often as worth the money, because it stops both overdosing and under-washing. A quick wash of 15 to 30 minutes covers lightly worn clothes without a full cycle. Steam and anti-allergy programmes help with sports kit, school uniforms and bedding. Wi-Fi and app control matter if you want to start a cycle on a cheaper night rate. And the noise rating matters more than people expect when the machine lives in a kitchen rather than a utility room. Check the energy label, but read the annual consumption figure rather than the letter alone.

Bosch covers Series 4, Series 6 and Series 8 including i-DOS and AntiStain. Samsung brings Ecobubble, AddWash and the AI Series, Beko the EnergySpin, Aquatech, IronFast and Auto Dose ranges, and Hoover the H-Wash and Pro Wash lines with Wi-Fi. Haier covers the I-Pro Series 5 and 7, with Electrolux, Blomberg, Zanussi, Candy, Hisense and Miele across the rest. Narrow by size in 6 to 8kg, 9kg, 10kg, 11kg and 12kg, or see washer dryers where there is only room for one machine.

Washing machines are the appliance people buy in a hurry, because the old one has flooded a kitchen or stopped mid cycle, and that urgency is what costs money. Prices are live all year, so see what is reduced now on washing machines on sale, or the Black Friday washing machine deals.
