Icicle Christmas Lights

Icicle Christmas Lights

Icicle lights hang as drops of varying length from a single horizontal run, which is what gives the ragged, frozen look along a gutter, a porch edge or a fascia board. They are the most effective outdoor Christmas lights for the money because the eye reads a line of uneven drops as deliberate where a flat string of bulbs reads as a wire. On a bungalow or a porch roof they do more for the front of a house than anything except a lit figure.

Snowing and Chasing Icicle Lights

A snowing icicle set runs the drops in sequence so the light appears to fall down each one in turn, which is the effect most people picture and the reason these sell. Multi action versions let you hold it steady instead, and almost everyone uses both over a season. Colour changing sets shift between white and warm white, which gives you two looks from one purchase.

Fitting Outdoor Icicle Lights

Measure the run first, since icicle sets are sold by the horizontal length rather than by total cable. Clip them to a gutter with proper gutter hooks rather than nails or tape, which also lets you take them down in January without a ladder fight. The set must be rated for exterior use, the connection belongs in a weatherproof box, and the drops should hang clear of anything that moves in wind. Check the drop lengths too, because a set with short drops on a high fascia disappears from street level.

Icicle sets here come from Festive, with 24 colour changing LED icicle lights running white to warm white, and Premier with snowing Iciclebrights at 480, 640 and 960 LEDs with timers in white, warm white and blue white. For the weatherproof boxes and gutter hooks see Christmas electrics and setup, and for the full range see Christmas lights.

Icicle lights go up with the outdoor display, which means late October and November rather than December. See what is reduced now in clearance.
