Heating

Sizing an electric heater is mostly arithmetic: a 2kW appliance draws two units an hour, so the useful question is not which heater is warmest but how long it needs to run. Fan heaters from 400W up to 3kW give instant heat and suit a workshop, a bathroom or a desk where you want warmth for twenty minutes and nothing afterwards. Oil-filled radiators from 500W to 2.5kW take longer to reach temperature but hold it, which makes them the better answer for a bedroom or a home office running all evening; oil-free versions do the same job and warm up faster. Convector and panel heaters at around 2kW sit between the two and can be wall-mounted out of the way. Where a room has no practical power run, a portable gas cabinet heater at 3kW to 4.2kW works off a refillable cylinder and needs no electricity at all. Infrared panels from 350W to 700W heat objects and people rather than air, which is worth considering in a conservatory or a poorly insulated room where warm air simply escapes. And where the goal is a warm person rather than a warm room, an electric blanket, a heat pad or a rechargeable hot water bottle costs a fraction of the running cost of any of the above. Look for a thermostat and a 24 hour timer on anything left running unattended, tip-over and overheat cut-outs on anything portable, and a frost protection setting from 450W if you are protecting an attic tank or a garage through the winter.

Gas Heaters

A portable gas heater is the answer when a room needs heat and the electrics will not carry it: a conservatory, a garage, a back kitchen or a house during a power cut. The cabinet models here run from 3kW up to 4.2kW off a refillable butane cylinder, with two or three heat settings and castors so the whole unit rolls between rooms. Portable Heaters

Portable electric heaters are for targeted, short-burst warmth: 400W under a desk, 500W plugged straight into a hallway socket, 2kW in a bathroom or bedroom, 3kW in a workshop. Ceramic and fan models give near-instant heat, convectors spread it more evenly, and halogen and carbon models throw directional warmth outdoors as well as in. Electric Radiators

Electric radiators are the choice for a room you heat for hours rather than minutes. Oil-filled models from 500W to 2.5kW store heat in the fins and keep radiating after the thermostat cuts out, while oil-free designs reach temperature faster and weigh less to move. Wall-mounted 1000W and 1500W units and 1000W heated towel rails free up floor space in bathrooms and small bedrooms, and the smart versions add app control and 24 hour scheduling so you are not paying to heat an empty room. Infrared Heaters

Infrared heaters warm people and surfaces directly instead of heating the air, so they hold their own in rooms that lose warm air quickly: conservatories, high-ceilinged spaces and older houses. Panels from 350W to 700W mount on a wall or ceiling, run silently with no fan, and several add Wi-Fi control so they can be scheduled from a phone. Electric Fires

An electric fire gives a room a focal point without a chimney, a flue or a fuel delivery. Freestanding stoves at around 2kW with LED log and flame effects drop into an existing hearth, inset fires from 1.9kW fit a standard 16 inch opening, and frameless wall-mounted models up to 50 inches suit a modern living room. Electric Blankets

An electric blanket is the cheapest heat in the house, at a few cent a night against a euro an hour for a room heater. Underblankets and heated mattress covers sit beneath the sheet and warm the bed before you get into it; overblankets and heated throws sit on top for the sofa as well as the bed. Electric Heat Pads

Heat pads apply warmth to one spot, whether that is the lower back, the neck and shoulders or the feet, rather than a whole bed or room. The lumbar and neck pads are shaped to stay in place while you sit, heated belts strap on and stay on while you move about, and electric foot warmers take a 70W element into a lined boot for cold evenings at a desk. Hot Water Bottles

Rechargeable electric hot water bottles have largely replaced the kettle-filled kind: ten to fifteen minutes on the mains stores several hours of heat with no boiling water to carry. Standard and long shapes cover a bed or a back, plush and fleece covers stay comfortable against skin, and traditional rubber and covered bottles remain for anyone who prefers them. Heating is unusual in that the deepest reductions come at the ends of the season rather than in the middle of it, so a heater bought in September or in March costs less than the same heater in the first cold week of December, when everybody in the country wants one at once. Black Friday and Cyber Monday fall mid season, so the cuts are narrower here than in categories with a longer clearance cycle, and they land hardest on gas heaters, electric blankets and the personal warmth range, all of which are heavily bought as gifts.
