This is the most seasonal group in the shop and the pricing follows the weather rather than the calendar, which means the prices worth having appear at the two ends of a season rather than in the middle of it. A heater bought in September or March costs less than the same heater bought in the first cold snap of December, and a fan or a patio heater bought in October costs a fraction of what it costs during the first warm week of June.

On the heating side the decision that saves the most money is not which heater to buy, it is which room you are heating and for how long. Running cost is wattage multiplied by hours, so a 2kW fan heater costs exactly the same to run as a 2kW oil filled radiator. The difference is in how they behave: the fan heater warms the room in minutes and stops feeling warm the moment it is switched off, while the oil filled radiator takes longer to come up and keeps radiating afterwards. For a room you sit in all evening the slow heater works out cheaper, because the thermostat cycles it off more often. For a room you are in for twenty minutes, the fast heater wins. Bottled gas remains the cheapest way to heat a large or poorly insulated room, at the cost of needing ventilation and a cylinder, and infrared panels heat objects and people rather than air, which is why they suit conservatories and high ceilinged rooms where warm air simply rises away.

On the cooling and air treatment side the machines solve three different problems and are not interchangeable. A fan moves air and makes a room feel cooler without lowering its temperature, which is enough for most Irish summers and costs almost nothing to run. An air purifier filters dust, pollen, pet dander, smoke and odours out of the air. A dehumidifier pulls water out of it. Condensation on the inside of the windows and black mould in the corners of external walls is a moisture problem and needs the dehumidifier. Sneezing every morning from February onwards, a dog that sheds, or a kitchen that still smells of last night, is an air quality problem and needs the purifier. Buying the wrong one of the two is the commonest mistake in this category.

The weekend lands at an awkward point for this group, in the middle of the heating season rather than at either end, so the heating reductions are narrower than in categories like television and floorcare.
