Christmas Tree Skirts

A tree skirt does two jobs at once: it hides the stand and the trailing lead, and it gives the base of the tree a finished edge instead of three metal legs on a carpet. Diameter is the thing to get right. A six foot tree wants roughly a 90cm to 100cm skirt, a seven foot tree closer to 120cm, and anything narrower leaves the stand showing at the front where everyone looks. Most skirts here open at one side with a slit and close around the trunk, so you can fit it after the tree is up rather than threading it on first.

Choosing a Tree Skirt by Size and Fabric

Faux fur and knitted skirts suit a warm, traditional room and sit well under a green tree with warm white lights. Hessian, linen and plain woven skirts read quieter and work better under a flocked or white tree where the lights are doing the work. Whichever you pick, check the slit is wide enough for your stand: a heavy cast stand on a seven footer needs more clearance than the light plastic base on a slim tree. Matching the Skirt to Your Christmas Tree

Buy the tree first and the skirt second. The tree's footprint, not its height, decides the diameter you need, and slim or pencil trees take a much smaller skirt than a full profile tree of the same height. Finishing the Base of the Tree

The skirt is the last layer, so it goes down after the lights and before the presents. If the lead from the tree lights runs across the floor, bring it out at the back and tape it down before the skirt goes on.
