Three different tools sit here and picking the wrong one is the usual mistake. A jug blender is a fixed goblet on a powered base, and it is what you want for smoothies, milkshakes, batters and anything needing a fine, even result, because the shape circulates the contents back through the blades. A hand blender, sometimes called a stick blender or liquidiser, goes into the pan or jug itself, which means soups and sauces are blended where they were cooked with nothing extra to wash and no transferring hot liquid. It cannot achieve the same fineness as a jug blender on ice or frozen fruit. A 3 in 1 hand blender adds a whisk and a chopping bowl, which covers most of what a food processor does at a fraction of the size. A food processor is the third tool, and its real strength is bulk chopping, slicing and grating rather than liquidising. Capacity of 1.5 litre is the household standard for a jug. Wattage matters most on frozen ingredients and ice, so 600W and above is worth having if smoothies are the main use. Glass jugs resist scratching and staining better than plastic but weigh considerably more.
