Setup and Care

Battery installation and first use:

Slide a charged DeWalt 18V XR or FlexVolt battery pack onto the base of the trimmer until it clicks into place. Grip the rear handle and activate the D-ring safety switch with your front hand before squeezing the trigger. Start with a light pass along the top of the hedge to establish the cutting line, then work down the sides. The dual-action blades cut in both directions, so you can sweep the trimmer left and right without needing to follow a specific direction.

Cutting technique for clean, even hedges:

For the neatest finish, angle the blade slightly (about 10 degrees) so the tips point inward towards the hedge. This tapered cutting angle encourages the hedge to grow wider at the base and narrower at the top, allowing sunlight to reach all levels and promoting even, dense growth. The 25mm blade gap handles most hedge species including privet, beech, laurel, box, and leylandii without jamming.

Using the clippings sweeper attachment:

The optional DeWalt hedge clippings sweeper attachment (sold separately) fits onto the blade and brushes cut foliage off the top of the hedge as you trim. This saves a separate step of clearing clippings after cutting and keeps the finished hedge surface clean as you work.

Blade care, cleaning, and storage:

After each use, wipe the blades with a dry cloth to remove sap, moisture, and debris. Apply a light coating of blade lubricant or spray oil to protect against rust and maintain smooth cutting action. Hang the trimmer using the wall-mounting hook in a dry shed or garage. Remove the battery when the tool is stored for extended periods. Inspect the blades before each use for chips, bending, or damage.
