A boxed mattress is compressed, rolled and vacuum sealed for transport, and that matters more than it sounds: it will go up a narrow stairs and round a tight landing that a conventional mattress simply cannot, which is the single most common delivery problem with beds in older houses. Once unwrapped it expands to full size, and it is worth allowing it to stand and recover for several hours before sleeping on it rather than judging it straight out of the box. Size is the measurement to get right and it is quoted in centimetres, so measure the bed frame internally rather than the old mattress, since a sagging mattress can read short. Beyond size, the choice is about the comfort layer. A pocket sprung or hybrid construction supports different parts of the body independently, which suits couples and anyone who moves in the night, because movement on one side transfers less. Aloe vera and treated covers add a soft, breathable top surface, which is the practical benefit for anyone who sleeps warm. Firmness is genuinely personal rather than better or worse, and a heavier person or a back sleeper generally wants firmer support than a lighter or side sleeper. Turn or rotate a mattress periodically according to the maker's guidance to even out the wear.
