Multi-Purpose & Specialist Paint

Specialist paint exists because ordinary emulsion and gloss fail on certain surfaces, and choosing by surface rather than by colour is the whole job here. Metal is the clearest case: bare or rusting steel needs a rust primer first and then a direct-to-metal finish that seals rather than simply coats, which is why rust and metal paints and agricultural machinery colours are formulated separately from anything used indoors. Exterior wood is the other main case, where garden shades and woodstains soak into the timber and flex with it through wet and dry weather instead of forming a film that cracks and peels. Wood dyes are different again, colouring the grain without covering it, and are used before a varnish or oil rather than instead of one. Surface preparation decides the result more than the product does.

The brands here are the ones specified for these jobs, including Cuprinol across the Garden Shades woodstain range in one, two and a half and five litre tins, Lowe for rust primers and rust and metal paints, Douglas for metal and agricultural colours, and Rustins for wood dyes and restoration finishes. Related departments are Metal Paint, Exterior Woodcare, Interior Woodcare, All Purpose Paint, Spray Paint and Primers & Undercoat.
