There are three kinds of clothes dryer and the difference is simply what each one does with the water it takes out of your washing. A vented dryer blows the warm damp air out through a hose to a window or an outside wall, which makes it the cheapest to buy and the most awkward to site, since it needs a permanent opening. A condenser dryer turns that moisture back into water and collects it in a tank you empty, or plumbs it to a drain, so it can sit anywhere with a socket. A heat pump dryer is a condenser that recycles its own heat instead of throwing it away, which is why it runs at a much lower temperature and uses roughly half to a third of the electricity of the other two. That last point is the whole argument in an Irish house: a heat pump dryer costs more to buy and pays it back over a few years of regular use, it is gentler on clothes because the drum never gets as hot, and it is the only type that reaches the higher energy ratings. It is also slower per cycle, and it needs its condenser filter rinsed every few loads or it quietly loses performance, which is the single most common reason people think a heat pump dryer has failed. Capacity should be about the same as your washing machine or one step larger, so an 8kg wash pairs with an 8 or 9kg dryer; 8 and 9kg suits most households, 10kg suits a family of five or more, and 12kg is for a big household or a lot of bedding. Look for a sensor drying programme, which stops when the clothes are dry rather than running a fixed timer and is where most of the real saving comes from, and check whether the model can be plumbed to a drain if you would rather not empty a tank. If there is no room for a dryer at all, a heated airer or a dehumidifier beside a clothes horse does the same job more slowly for a fraction of the running cost.

Washer Dryers

The important thing to understand is that the dry capacity is always lower than the wash capacity, so a 9kg wash and 6kg dry machine means splitting a full wash load in two before drying it.
