Shelving & Hooks

Shelving Units

Free-standing shelving units in galvanised steel and heavy-duty plastic, typically 4 or 5 tier. Boltless steel units slot together without tools and carry substantial weight per shelf, which makes them the standard choice for garages, workshops and stockrooms. Plastic units resist damp and will not corrode, so they suit sheds, garden stores and utility rooms. Check the stated load per shelf rather than the total, since that is the figure that matters when stacking paint tins or tools, and measure the height against what you plan to store on the top shelf.

Floating Shelves

Floating shelves use concealed brackets so no fixings are visible from below or the side, giving a clean line that suits living rooms, alcoves and bedrooms. The bracket slides into the back of the shelf and screws into the wall behind, which means the fixing has to be right: into studs or with proper plasterboard anchors rated for the load. They carry less weight than a bracketed shelf of the same size because the load is cantilevered, so they are better suited to books, frames and ornaments than heavy kitchen storage.

Wall Shelves

Wall-mounted shelving in a range of widths and finishes, either supplied as a complete shelf and bracket set or built up from separate components. Wall shelves free the floor entirely, which is why they work in small rooms, hallways and home offices. The fixing decides the load: into masonry with the right plug a wall shelf will hold considerable weight, while plasterboard needs spring toggles or heavy-duty anchors. Consider depth carefully, since a shelf deeper than about 30cm starts to intrude into a room and catch shoulders in a corridor.

Corner Shelves

Corner shelves make use of the space most rooms waste, fitting into internal corners in living rooms, bathrooms and bedrooms. They come as single units and as multi-tier sets, and because two edges meet the wall they are inherently more stable than a single-wall shelf of the same size. Common uses run from bathroom toiletries and plants to speakers and router shelves. Measure both walls, since not every internal corner is a true right angle in an older house, and check whether the shelf is handed or symmetrical.

Shelf Brackets

Individual shelf brackets in fixed and heavy-duty patterns, sized by the two arm lengths, for example 300mm x 210mm or 500mm x 330mm. The longer arm goes against the wall and the shorter carries the shelf, so the wall arm should be as long as practical for stability. Industrial styles in white and black powder coat are often left deliberately visible as part of the look. Buying brackets and board separately is usually cheaper than a matched kit and lets you cut a shelf to an exact width.

Uprights

Slotted uprights are wall-mounted vertical rails that accept brackets at set intervals, so shelf heights can be moved later without re-drilling. Two or more uprights are fixed plumb to the wall and twin slotted brackets in 270mm and 370mm clip into the slots. This is the system to choose where the contents will change over time, such as a growing collection, a garage wall or a shop display, since adjusting a shelf takes seconds rather than making new holes. Load capacity depends on upright spacing and the fixings used behind them.

Hooks

Wall, door and adhesive hooks for coats, keys, tools, bikes, hoses and garden equipment. Screw-fixed metal hooks carry the most weight and are the right answer for anything heavy in a garage or shed, while adhesive hooks avoid drilling entirely and suit tiled bathrooms, rented homes and lightweight items. Over-door hooks need no fixing at all. Jumbo metal hooks handle bulky loads such as ladders, extension leads and coiled hose. Check the stated weight limit, and remember that adhesive strength drops sharply on damp or dusty surfaces.
