LEGO is easiest to choose by theme. The theme tells you the kind of build, the characters in the box and roughly who it is pitched at, from chunky DUPLO for toddlers to 1,600-piece Technic cars for adults. This guide walks through the ten most searched-for LEGO themes in Ireland, compares a budget, mid-range and premium set in each, and then covers every other range we stock so nothing gets missed. Every set listed is in stock at the time of writing, and set numbers are included so you can match the exact box.

Which LEGO Theme Is Right for Them?
Start with what they already love: a film, a game, cars, animals or simply building. Then check the age mark on the box. It reflects both how fiddly the build is and small-part safety, so a set well above a child's age tends to frustrate rather than stretch them. All LEGO bricks fit together whatever the theme, so sets from different ranges can be mixed freely.
| Theme | Typical age marks | Kind of build | Best for |
| LEGO Star Wars | 4+ to adult | Ships, mechs, battle scenes and display busts | Star Wars fans of any age |
| LEGO Marvel and Batman | 4+ to adult | Hero versus villain scenes, mechs and vehicles | Spider-Man, Avengers and Batman fans |
| LEGO Technic | 7+ to adult | Gears, axles and working mechanisms | Kids and adults who enjoy how things work |
| LEGO F1 and Speed Champions | 6+ to adult | Licensed race cars and supercars | Formula 1 and car fans |
| LEGO City | 4+ to 7+ | Police, fire, farm and construction vehicles | Everyday role play |
| LEGO Flowers (Botanicals) | 9+ to adult | Bouquets and plants for display | Adults, teens and gifting |
| LEGO Ninjago | 6+ to 14+ | Ninja dragons, mechs and battle packs | Action play and the TV series |
| LEGO Friends | 5+ to 7+ | Mini-doll scenes, animals and fairground rides | Storytelling and role play |
| LEGO Harry Potter | 8+ to adult | Hogwarts scenes, creatures and display pieces | Wizarding World fans |
| LEGO DUPLO | 2+ to 3+ | Large, easy-grip bricks | Toddlers and first builders |
| Every other theme | Varies | Minecraft, Disney, Jurassic World, Bluey, gaming, Icons and more | See the round-up below |
LEGO Star Wars Sets

LEGO Star Wars is the longest-running licensed LEGO theme, and the best LEGO Star Wars sets are easiest to choose by size rather than by film. Mechs and microfighters are the quick, pocket-friendly entry point. Mid-size ships and speeders bring several minifigures and a proper play scene. The large walkers and vehicles are an afternoon's build and a centrepiece afterwards. Check which minifigures are in the box, because for many fans the characters are the reason for buying.

LEGO Marvel and Batman Sets

LEGO Super Heroes covers both Marvel and DC, so first check which universe they follow: a Spider-Man fan and a Batman fan want very different boxes. Mech sets put a hero in a posable robot suit and are the quick, sturdy entry point. Versus sets pair a hero and a villain with a vehicle or scene, which gives children the conflict they want straight out of the box. The bigger battle sets and busts are built for display as much as play.

LEGO Technic Sets

LEGO Technic is the engineering theme. Instead of standard bricks it uses beams, axles, pins and gears, so the finished model has working parts: steering that turns, buckets that lift, pistons that move. The build is the point, which is why Technic suits older children and adults who enjoy seeing how a machine works. Difficulty varies a lot, so read the piece count and age mark rather than assuming every Technic set is advanced. Technic parts also combine with ordinary LEGO bricks.

LEGO F1 and Speed Champions Cars

LEGO F1 sets now run across several themes, which makes them easy to miss. LEGO City has small F1 cars for younger fans, Speed Champions has a near-complete grid of current team cars at one consistent scale, Technic has large-scale engineering models, and LEGO Editions has driver helmets for display. Speed Champions is also the home of LEGO cars more generally, from supercars to film cars, and each car comes with a driver minifigure.

For a large-scale F1 build, see the Mercedes-AMG in the Technic section.
LEGO City Sets

LEGO City is the everyday-world theme, built around the vehicles and jobs children already recognise, which is why it suits such a wide age range and why sets combine naturally into one town. Emergency services are the most popular strand, with police and fire sets built for chase and rescue play. Construction, farm and town vehicles lean more towards building and role play. Smaller City sets often include a LEGO Starter Brick and simple pictorial guides for first-time builders.

LEGO Flowers and Botanicals

LEGO flowers, sold as the Botanicals range, work differently from every other theme because the finished model is the point. These are buildable flowers and plants meant to be displayed on a shelf, a desk or in a vase. They never wilt or need water, the build is calm and repetitive in a good way, and they make a thoughtful alternative to cut flowers as a gift. Bouquets use adjustable stems, so stems from different sets can be combined into one arrangement. Potted plants are self-contained and need no vase.

Small battle packs and mechs are quick builds for younger fans, the dragons are the classic mid-range gift, and the larger anniversary and transforming sets are aimed at older and returning fans.

LEGO Harry Potter Sets

Younger fans tend to want the minifigures and scenes, while teenagers and adults often go for the display pieces. Many sets connect, so a collection of Hogwarts rooms can grow over time.

LEGO DUPLO for Toddlers

LEGO DUPLO bricks are twice the length, width and height of standard LEGO bricks, so they are easy for small hands to grip and build with. Sets are marked from 2+ and focus on familiar things: vehicles, animals, homes and favourite characters like Bluey. DUPLO also works with standard LEGO, as regular bricks press onto DUPLO bricks, so nothing is wasted when children move up.

Tips Before You Buy LEGO
Use the set number. Every LEGO set has a five-digit number, such as 75411 or 10374, printed on the box. It is the most reliable way to find the exact set you were asked for, since names can be similar across themes. The age mark tells you more than the theme does: it reflects how fiddly the build is as well as small parts, so check it before you buy.
Sets do not stay on shelves forever. LEGO retires sets regularly as new waves arrive, so a set someone has their heart set on can become hard to find. If it is for a birthday or Christmas, it is worth buying early.
Everything fits together. Bricks from any theme or decade work with each other, and standard LEGO bricks press onto DUPLO bricks. Not sure where to start? Browse the full LEGO range at Heavins.ie by theme.
