Christmas Lights

Christmas Lights

Three questions settle which set of Christmas lights you need, and none of them is the price. First, where is it going: a tree wants a set spaced for wrapping branches, a window wants a curtain or a run of fine wire, eaves and gutters want icicles, and a bush or a front wall wants a dense cluster. Second, mains or battery. Mains gives the brightness and length a tree or a facade needs; battery frees a wreath, a window or a shelf from a socket; and a timer on either means you set it once in November and stop thinking about it. Third, the colour temperature, which is the one that quietly ruins displays: warm white is the soft yellow glow of a traditional set, bright or cool white is the crisp blue-tinted one, and the two look like a mistake side by side.

The bulb count is the figure people most often get wrong. The working rule for a tree is roughly 100 LEDs per foot of height, so a 7ft tree wants about 700 and an 8ft about 800, and most people buy half that and wonder why the tree looks thin. Read lit length rather than total length too, because the lead from the plug to the first bulb can be two metres of the number on the box. Anything going outside must be rated for exterior use and needs a weatherproof connection box rather than an extension lead under a bag, since that is the part that fails in the first storm rather than the lights themselves. Multi action sets cycle through eight or so sequences including a steady setting, which is the one most people settle on.

Christmas Tree Lights

Sets made specifically for a tree, spaced so the cable disappears into the branches rather than looping across them. Counts run from 1,000 LEDs for a 6ft tree up to 3,000 for a 9ft or 10ft, in warm white, white and multi coloured, all with timers. Browse Christmas tree lights.

Cluster Christmas Lights

Cluster lights pack several times as many bulbs into the same length of cable, which gives a dense rope of light rather than a dotted line. They are what you want on a garden shrub, a porch pillar or a tree you want to look solid rather than sparse. See cluster lights.

Icicle and Outdoor Christmas Lights

Icicle lights hang in drops of varying length along a gutter, a porch edge or a fascia, and snowing or chasing versions run the drops in sequence. For outdoor Christmas lights generally, check the IP rating and plan the cable run from the socket before you buy. Browse icicle lights.

Christmas Window and Curtain Lights

Curtain lights hang as a sheet of fine wire drops that fill a window frame, in star and snowflake patterns as well as plain. Christmas window lights are the cheapest way to make the front of a house read from the road without touching a ladder. See curtain and window lights and candle bridges.

Mains and Battery Christmas Lights

Mains sets give you length and brightness with no batteries to change, which is what a tree or a facade needs. Battery sets go where there is no socket, run on a timer and suit wreaths, windowsills and shelves. Browse mains powered lights and battery operated lights.

Warm White, White and Coloured Christmas Lights

Pick one colour temperature and hold it across the house. Warm white is the traditional soft glow and the most forgiving indoors; white and cool white read crisp and modern and suit silver and blue schemes; multi coloured is the classic family tree. Shop warm white, white and multi coloured Christmas lights.

Premier carries most of the range: Treebrights from 1,000 to 3,000 LEDs, Clusterbrights from 480 to 5,000, battery Microbrights and Ultrabrights, Flexibrights star and snowflake curtain lights, flicker candles, and large outdoor pieces including the LED candy cane arch and the Merry Christmas sign. Festive supplies the Traditional Firefly fine wire sets from 300 to 1,000 and colour changing icicle lights, Lumineo and Kaemingk the garden stakes and lit signs, Govee smart outdoor string and festoon lighting, and Masterplug the weatherproof boxes and outdoor leads that make a garden display safe.

Lights follow the tree. Demand climbs from late October and peaks through November and December, and the long cluster sets and outdoor runs go first because people underestimate how many they need. Black Friday falls on Friday 27 November 2026 and Cyber Monday on Monday 30 November, which is late in the cycle for lights: the reductions are real but the popular bulb counts are thin by then, and the deep clearance comes in January.
