Candles are chosen by shape as much as by scent, because the shape decides where a candle can sit. Pillar candles at around 11cm stand alone or in a holder and are the ones that read as decorative on a mantelpiece or a dining table. Candlesticks and dinner candles at 7.5cm and 16.5cm need a stick holder and suit a set table. Tealights are the workhorse, sold in 40 packs with around eight hours of burn each, and they go in lanterns, t-light holders and anywhere a small light is wanted. Larger scented candles in glass, wood or copper vessels burn evenly to the base and carry a fragrance through a room. Holders matter more than people expect, since a stem holder, a woven t-light pair or a three-piece Tree of Life set changes the look far more than the candle itself does. Trim the wick to a few millimetres before each burn and a candle will last considerably longer.
