Console choice usually comes down to what friends already own, since that is what decides who you can play with, but the hardware differences are worth knowing. A disc drive matters if second hand and boxed games are part of the plan or if the house already has a library, while a digital only console is cheaper up front and locks you into store pricing. Storage fills faster than anyone expects, because current generation titles run to a hundred gigabytes and more, so an expansion drive is a realistic second purchase rather than a luxury. On the display side, a console is only as good as what it is plugged into, and getting 4K at 120Hz out of one needs an HDMI 2.1 input and variable refresh rate on the television, which is worth checking before blaming the console for a soft picture. For controllers, a second pad is what turns a console into something two people use, and rechargeable rather than battery powered is the only sensible choice. Headsets matter more for online play than speakers do, and a wired headset avoids the latency and charging that come with wireless, though a wireless one is far more comfortable over a long session.

Beyond consoles, the accessories that get used are charging docks, extra storage, controller grips and a decent headset, and the ones that gather dust are racing wheels bought optimistically. For younger players, look at the parental controls and the age ratings on the games rather than the hardware. For a gift, a console bundled with a game is almost always better value than the two bought separately, and a store credit voucher covers the case where the recipient already owns the obvious title.

Consoles sit in PlayStation 5 Consoles, with the wider year round range of games, headsets and accessories in Gaming. A television with HDMI 2.1 and a 120Hz panel is what unlocks the picture these consoles can produce, and the reduced sets are in Black Friday TV Deals, with reduced headsets and earbuds in Black Friday Headphone Deals.
