Fleetwood Polyurethane Varnish is a traditional alkyd-based wood varnish formulated for interior use. It delivers excellent adhesion and durability on bare timber or timber that has previously been treated with varnish, leaving a hard-wearing clear gloss finish.

Can this polyurethane varnish be used on timber that has already been varnished, or is it for bare wood only?

It works on both. This varnish bonds to bare timber and to timber that has previously been treated with varnish, so there is no need to strip back to raw wood if the existing finish is sound. It is suited to doors, door frames, wooden windows and window frames, and smooth planed furniture - all interior surfaces.

Does this varnish contain hazardous chemicals?

Yes, this is a traditional solvent-based alkyd formulation and it does contain hazardous chemicals. Before opening the tin, read the manufacturer's safety data sheet for handling, ventilation, storage, and disposal guidance. The VPG01C is 2010 VOC compliant, but the solvent content means proper precautions are required. Refer to the safety data sheet before use.

How does this alkyd-based varnish compare to a water-based quick-dry varnish?

This is a traditional solvent-based alkyd polyurethane, which builds a hard-wearing, durable gloss film with excellent adhesion - characteristics that suit high-traffic surfaces such as doors and window frames where longevity matters. Water-based varnishes dry faster and have lower odour, but the alkyd formula is regarded as the tougher, more established option for interior timber that takes daily wear.

Can this varnish be applied with a standard brush, or is a sprayer needed?
