Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain is a solvent-based, microporous exterior wood stain formulated specifically for joinery such as doors, windows, and conservatories. Its microporous structure allows moisture vapour to escape from the timber while repelling liquid water, which helps prevent blistering, flaking, and peeling even under changing weather conditions. It is manufactured in the United Kingdom and is suitable for both softwood and hardwood, with the exception of decking or surfaces subject to heavy wear.

Translucent, semi-gloss finish that shows the grain:

The Antique Pine shade delivers a warm, translucent colour with a semi-gloss sheen, allowing the natural grain of the wood to remain visible beneath the finish. Coverage reaches up to 15m² per litre on planed softwood or hardwood, making this 2.5-litre tin sufficient for a substantial area of exterior joinery. The finish provides long-lasting colour retention and guards against UV damage and weathering year after year.

For optimum durability on new or bare wood, Sadolin recommend applying one coat of Sadolin Classic as a base coat before finishing with two full coats of Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain. This two-product system maximises adhesion and durability on exterior joinery. The product can be applied by brush only; Sadolin do not recommend spraying. Do not apply when air or substrate temperatures are below 8°C or above 25°C, or when timber moisture content exceeds 18%.

For new or bare timber, one coat of Sadolin Classic as a base coat is recommended before applying two full coats of Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain. This two-product system maximises adhesion and durability. On already-treated surfaces, the base coat step may not be required. Skipping it on bare wood risks reduced longevity, so the three-coat approach is worth following.

Is this exterior woodstain suitable for decking or high-wear surfaces?

No - this woodstain is not suitable for decking or any surface subject to heavy wear or abrasion. It is formulated for exterior joinery including doors, windows, conservatories, and timber frames. The SKU covered here is 5028529. For decking, a product specifically designed for foot traffic and abrasion resistance should be used instead.

What area will this 2.5-litre tin cover?

On planed softwood or hardwood, coverage reaches up to 15 square metres per litre, giving this 2.5-litre tin a potential spread of up to 37.5 square metres. The Antique Pine shade delivers a translucent, semi-gloss finish, so the natural grain of the wood remains fully visible beneath the colour - not hidden by an opaque layer.
