The first decision on any garden power tool is the power source, and it now goes further than it used to. Battery has taken over most domestic work: cordless grass trimmers around 25cm, hedge trimmers at 45cm and 52cm, chainsaws and cordless shrub and grass shears all run long enough for an average garden, and once you are on a battery platform the second and third tool cost far less. Corded electric still makes sense for a trimmer or hedge cutter used close to the house where there is no runtime limit. Petrol holds on for multifunction loop-handle machines on rough ground. Separately, robotic mowers have moved from novelty to practical, with GPS, LiDAR and wire-free models rated by lawn area from 500 up to 9,000 square metres, and lawn area is the specification that matters most.
