Frequently Asked Questions

What size generator do I need?

What you need to know first

When sizing a generator, two main power ratings matter:

  • Running (or continuous) watts: the power needed to keep your devices operating.
  • Starting (or surge) watts: extra power needed at startup, especially for motors, refrigerators, pumps, etc.

Many devices demand 2 to 3 times more power just to start than they need to run.

Also, consider that you don’t want to push a generator to its absolute limit — it’s safer and more reliable to choose one that gives you a safety margin (e.g. you use only 80–90% of its capacity).

How to pick the right size — step by step

Here’s a simple method:

  1. List everything you want to power at the same time (lights, fridge, TV, pump, etc.).
  2. Find the running wattage for each item (from specs, labels, manuals).
  3. Find the starting wattage for items that have motors or compressors (fridge, pump, AC).
  4. Add up all the running watts.
  5. Add the highest starting watt extra (you usually only need the extra surge power for one or a few items at a time).
  6. Choose a generator whose capacity (running + some extra) is higher than what you calculated, so it’s not strained.

How does a petrol generator work?

  1. Fuel goes in – You fill the generator’s tank with petrol.
  2. Engine runs – When you start it, the petrol engine works much like a car engine: it burns fuel to make mechanical energy.
  3. Alternator makes electricity – The spinning engine turns an alternator (a device with magnets and coils of wire), which converts the mechanical energy into electricity.
  4. Power comes out – That electricity is then sent to the outlets on the generator so you can plug in tools, appliances, or extension cords.
  5. Voltage regulation – Most generators include regulators or inverters to keep the power steady and safe for your devices.

So, in short: petrol is burned to spin an engine, the engine spins an alternator, and the alternator produces electricity you can use.
