Flies and wasps need different treatments, and for flies the choice is between killing what is already indoors and stopping more getting in. An electric fly zapper draws insects to a blue UV light and kills them on contact with a high voltage grid, which works quietly and continuously and suits a kitchen, utility room or shop. Rechargeable lantern models do the same job outdoors on a patio. A bug bat, or electric fly swat, is the immediate option, shaped like a tennis racket and powered on contact. Fly papers and window stickers are chemical-free and passive, catching insects on an adhesive surface over days rather than seconds, and the window versions are printed as butterflies or fruit so they are less unsightly. Sprays deal with what is in the air right now. Wasps are the more serious problem: a nest destroyer foam or powder is applied directly to the nest entrance, usually at dusk when the colony is inside, and the foam versions have a jet that lets you stand well back.
