Exterior masonry paint has a harder job than anything used indoors, because it has to shed Irish rain, move with the wall as it expands and contracts, and resist the algae and green growth that takes hold on a north-facing gable. That is why masonry paint is formulated separately rather than simply being tougher emulsion, and why a flexible or weather-resistant grade earns its cost on a rendered or pebbledashed wall. Two coats is the working assumption on any colour change, and coverage drops sharply on textured render, so measure the wall and allow for it rather than buying to the tin. Timing matters as much as product: paint onto a dry wall, with dry weather forecast for long enough to let each coat cure, which in practice narrows the season considerably.
