Why condition wood before staining?
Bare wood, particularly softwoods and open-grained hardwoods, absorbs stain unevenly, which leads to patchy, blotchy results that are difficult to correct once the stain has dried. Rustins Quick Dry Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner partially seals the grain of porous timber before you apply your stain or varnish, ensuring the colour goes on evenly across the entire surface. One coat is usually sufficient for this preparation stage.
Quick-drying, water-based formula:
Formulated with a water-based acrylic emulsion, this conditioner is touch dry in approximately 30 minutes, depending on temperature and humidity. You can re-coat with a water-based stain or varnish after as little as two hours. If you are following up with a spirit-based stain, allow eight hours before applying the next coat. The formula is non-flammable and carries a minimal VOC rating, making it a practical choice for indoor projects where ventilation is limited.
Suitable for interior and exterior timber:
This conditioner is designed for any bare, porous timber, both indoors and outdoors. It works on hardwoods and softwoods alike, including furniture, doors, panelling, floors, and decking. Once dry, it leaves a clear, near-invisible finish that has no effect on the final stain or varnish colour you apply over it. Do not use below 10°C or in conditions of high humidity.
Application:
Stir well before use. Apply evenly with a brush, pad, or sponge. After five minutes, wipe off any excess material with a clean cloth. Clean brushes immediately after use with water. The 500ml tin covers approximately 6 m² per coat, making it suitable for small to medium woodworking and refinishing projects. Store in the original, tightly closed container for a shelf life of many years.
