Sound is what separates footage that looks amateur from footage that looks finished, and the on-board microphone in a camera or phone is almost always the weak link, because it sits metres from the speaker and picks up wind, handling noise and the whole room. A wireless system moves the microphone onto the person instead. The specification that decides everything is the transmitter and receiver count. A two-transmitter, one-receiver kit records two people independently on separate channels, which is what an interview, a two-hander or a piece to camera with a guest actually needs, while a single transmitter covers one speaker and nothing more. The charging case is the other thing to check, since it stores, protects and recharges both transmitters and the receiver together, which is the difference between a system that is ready when you pick it up and one that needs three cables first. Transmitters clip magnetically to clothing for hands-free use, and a wired lavalier can be added to a transmitter where the microphone needs to sit closer to the mouth or out of shot entirely. Where the camera supports it, a direct wireless link removes the separate recorder and the sync step from the edit.

Everything here is DJI. The Mic 3 is the current generation, supplied as two transmitters, one receiver and a charging case, and the Mic 2 covers the same configuration a generation back. The Mic Mini takes the compact route as a two-person wireless system with two transmitters, one receiver and a charging case, and the Lavalier Mic is the wired add-on that suits any DJI Mic transmitter. These transmitters connect directly to the bodies at DJI Osmo Pocket Cameras, which ship with a transmitter in the Creator Combo.
