Three decisions cover almost every laundry purchase. Capacity comes first and is quoted in kilograms of dry load: 8kg suits a couple, 9kg is the common family size, and 10 and 11kg machines are worth it if you wash bedding regularly rather than occasionally. Spin speed comes second, and 1400rpm is the standard here, taking enough water out that a dryer or a line has far less work to do. Drying method comes third and is where the running cost sits: a heat pump dryer recycles its own warm air rather than venting it, so it costs considerably less to run and does not need an outside vent, though a cycle takes longer. Where space allows two machines, a separate washer and dryer will out-perform a single washer dryer on both jobs; where it does not, a washer dryer does both in one footprint.
